WARWICK WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB NOTES - 17/1/22
The Warwick Women’s Golf Club 2022 programme got off to a great start on Saturday 8 Jan when twenty-nine players turned out for the first event of the year, the January Monthly Medal. Trish Roberts must have used the off-season well but started the round poorly being two over her handicap after only four holes. Something clicked during the round and she finished the last five holes, often considered some of the hardest on the course, four under her handicap for an unbeatable 65 nett. She had plenty to spare from Carole Brandon, the runner-up in Div2 with a 71 nett. Carole almost reversed Trish’s feat playing the last five holes in double bogies and worse. After a stint in Tasmania Carole was roundly welcomed home and won’t take long to find her feet. In Div 1 the medal was won by Judy Lester with a steady 72 nett, helped along by a great 44 gross on the back nine. Danielle Seibel was the runner-up with a solid 73 nett. Our ongoing Monthly Medal sponsor, the Condamine Club Hawker Road Function Centre, has agreed to stay with us but has generously added to the value of the winners and runners-up vouchers and also donated a voucher for the best first nine. This month’s winner was Majella Kahler with 20 pts. The best putters were Gwen Mills and Dian Macdonald, both with 28 putts and the run-down balls went to Joely Singleton 72, Di Johnston 73, Dian Macdonald 74 and Sam Hinze 74. The return of graded approach shots was appreciated by the winners, Marg Adcock, Lyn McKillop and Maria Carey and the Pro Pin on 11the was shared between Gwen Mills, Lisa Weatherley, Marg Adcock and Joely Singleton. Scores continued as follows: Div 1 – G Mills, M McLennan, A Cox, M Kahler 74, J Barnes, M Adcock 75, M Scotney 76, T Ingall 77, D Evans 84. Div 2 – L Weatherley 74, T Bell, L McKillop 78, H Olsen, M Carey 79, R Darton, W Rhea, A Lyons 81, J Stiff 82, S Cooper 84, L Lane, L Wilson NCR.
The first mid-week game of the 2022 season also attracted a reasonable field with twenty-four players taking out cards in the Cherry Tree & Dining sponsored single Stableford. Continuing her good form from the weekend and taking advantage of a few extra handicap strokes gained in the heavy atmosphere of Tassie, Carole used the Par 3s to amass a very handy 17 pts and then went on to score 39 pts, with a wash. She was also the first player for 2022 to put a spot on the Gobbles chart. Majella also scored a super 39 pts on the back of some superlative putting. You certainly gain some confidence from starting your round with four three pointers. A good birdie on the 16th didn’t hurt either but wasn’t enough to catch Carole in the count-back. Run-down balls were won by Anne Lyons 37, Sharron Cooper 36, Judy Lester 35 and Gwen Mills 34 pts. Anna won the front nine voucher with 19 pts and the Pro Pin on 7th was shared by Judy Lester, Mel McLennan, Wendy Rhea and Anna Cox. Other scores were: M McLennan, J Barnes 33, H Olsen 31, D Evans, T Bell, J Stewart 30, R Darton, P Hemmings 29, T Ingall 27, L McKillop 26, J Stiff, M Carey 25, W Rhea 24, A Payne 23, D Macdonald 22, V Bennett 19, M Vincent.
Trish Roberts showed it was no fluke when she turned up on Saturday 15 Jan and again broke the hundred mark to score 39 stab points and win the Cherry Tree & Dining voucher. Fortunately Trish had paid her Shoot-Out fees after her previous good round so this round will be a good start on the board for her. Two great four pointers made up for her two washes. Maria Carey made up for a couple of ordinary starts when she returned 35 pts to win the runner-up voucher. Balls in the run-down went to Anne Lyons 33, Wendy Rhea 32, Mary Young 32, and Annice Payne 31 pts. Molly Seibel took home the front nine voucher with a good 20 pts. The Pro Pin on 16th was shared by Judy Lester, Sam Hinze, Joely Singleton and Anna Cox, all inside one metre. With twenty-seven players in the field the remaining scores were: L Weatherley, M Kahler, L Cockram 31, J Lester, K Devereux, A Cox, J Singleton 30, D Evans, M Adcock, C Brandon, S Hinze 29, J Barnes 27, T Ingall, D Macdonald 23, H Olsen, P Hemmings, V Bennett 21, Y Pinington 18, L Wilson 16, L Lane 9. It was good to see Vonnie Pinington giving her new heart its first run over eighteen holes and to welcome Marlene Vincent back after a lengthy break. Justine Washbourne was also seen having a hit on the weekend and rumour has it that she is keen to return to golf now her son is 6 months old.
Coming events to make note of include the Big W sponsored 4BBB Stab this Saturday 22 Jan. This event was cancelled by rain at the end of 2021 so you probably already had a partner organised. Chase her up and get on the timesheet for a great days golf. Another event cancelled last year was the Medal of Medals and this will now be played on Saturday 29 January for those who are eligible. On Sunday 30 January the Club celebrates a yearly tradition with Opening Day, a medley 4BBB Stab to get the 2022 season underway. Sam Eaves will once again sponsor this event and we can expect some fabulous prizes now that Sam is rolling in prize-money after his creditable 17th place in the Australian PGA last weekend. Fantastic result for a club pro Sam. Women’s Golf Warwick is proud of you.
