President’s Report 2019
The Warwick Golf Club continues to move along nicely with most members seemingly happy with club progress and process. This is not to say that the year has been all smooth sailing, but there were no issues that haven’t been, or can’t be in the future, resolved.
Our two captains, Mary and Tony, have both worked extremely conscientiously and their organizational skills have helped greatly towards harmony in the club. I take this opportunity to congratulate both committees on a very successful year. Thanks to the Management Committee, and to Judy and her team, for their dedication to their various jobs, making the year the success that it has been. Thanks also to the Ladies’ committee for their donation of $5000 this year. Our treasurer, Trevor King, has produced another set of very satisfactory figures and has nominated for another term to exercise his considerable financial credentials. Office administrator, Kristen Doyle, is most approachable, efficient and an asset to the club.
There are many other jobs that keep the club running smoothly and we should thank the scribes, gardeners, fabricators, tree planters/waterers, painters, toilet cleaners, odd jobbers, clinic mentors, working bee participants and others. Trees around the course have suffered greatly from lack of rain and Allan Matthews’ expertise in trimming and felling trees has been a great advantage. He keeps his little gang of off-siders very busy at times.
Bob Lester, Mick Payne, Jill Barnes and Helen Olsen are three volunteers who spend almost every non-comp day on the course, assisting course superintendent Craig Cox and technician/groundsman Jake Bronger. There have been many favourable comments about the course presentation, from both local members and visiting players from other clubs. Considering the weather conditions, this is high praise. Thanks to Craig and Jake for their expertise and efforts over the past twelve months.
We have many financial sponsors and the best way to thank them is for us to support their businesses. Sponsorship is the lifeblood of our many competitions and we are grateful for their interest in our club. Financial life member, Gunter Nicklich, has backed up last year’s donation of $6000 with another similar gift this year. His generosity is appreciated greatly by all members. Sporters Golf Club continues to pay $2000 to the club each month, while holding a fixed deposit in reserve for any emergency payment that might be required.
The Condamine Sports Club continues to make improvements to the clubhouse with the installation of a 20kw solar system and the purchase of 250 new chairs, along with a new phone system. Thanks to Steve, Nathan, Rachel, Seb and team for their help and cooperation through the year.
This year saw the completion of the new toilets near the 5th tee. Thanks to Judy and Mary for winning the grant through Sport and Rec., and to Cec Watts for his plumbing advice and expertise. Members Lou Otts , Ben Brownlie and Ian Stewart were also instrumental in completing the successful project. This year also saw the purchase of new equipment – a ‘new’ course utility, a new Kubota RTV (mostly sponsored by Sporters Golf Club, Brendon’s Friday night raffles, and some of the Ladies’ $5000 donation ), a new Toro greens mower and a new Kubota out-front mower (both financed mostly by grants from the Gambling Community and won through the efforts of Mick and Annice Payne). The Toro tow-behind blower was purchased earlier in the year courtesy of Gunter’s generosity from 2018. The power supply to the top buggy sheds was completely rebuilt to correct the disruptive overloads that had been happening.
This serious on-going drought, accompanied by frequent wind storms, has severely tested our resources. We are grateful to the S.D.R.C. for agreeing to supply recycled water free of charge for the duration of the long dry. The electricity cost for all of the required pumping is still an extra burden caused by the drought. We are also grateful to our club volunteers who helped with course clean-ups of trees, branches, debris and washed- out bunkers the day before the championships and also again a week out from the recent Trainee Pro Am. The ‘Owls’ have provided the majority of volunteers for these activities, as well as supplying some course beautification items such as the professional-looking tee markers. The Owls are currently working towards further upgrades of infrastructure around the course.
The Proshop is a vital part of our organization and we thank Sam Eaves, Steve Kleese and Connor Cruice for their efforts through the year. A note -they would like to see more members using the timesheets so that they can help other members who are looking for a game! The men’s clinics introduced 27 men to our game but only about six have signed up as flexi members. Sam continues with the MyGolf junior programme. He and Brendon are hoping to increase the size of this group next year and there is some hope that a junior club can be reformed (the senior club may have to subsidise tuition costs to encourage more participants!). Steve and Connor have had success with their Trainee Pro Am. and are to be congratulated on the result. They have organised an event that has offered more prizemoney than any other like competition in Qld this year, and a day that was very well received by all who participated, both professional and amateur.
In October, the club organised a Bushfire Appeal Golf Day which raised $3600 and a cheque for that amount has been handed to the CWA for proper distribution. Thanks to our members who supported the charity day wholeheartedly.
This year we lost two members of our golfing fraternity. Gordon Kerr was a regular golfer till ill-health restricted his activities. Herb Ware has been a big part of this club continuously since 1960. Herb has been on committees, served as captain and was a regular at working bees in his younger days. Our condolences and best wishes go out to Pam and Anne and their families.
Finally, members who play regularly, whether midweek or on weekends, contribute both financially and socially to the well-being of our club. We thank you for your support over the past year and hope you can continue to play as regularly over the next twelve months.
Let’s hope that the weather in 2020 becomes more favourable to both the course and the playing of the game. Don Stewart
