Last Saturday hard working Vice President Bob Lester had his best round in a long time when he won the Horse and Jockey Hotel Motel single stableford. He needed to be at his best too as his 42 points which would have won most events in recent months by a comfortable margin was only just good enough to get home by a single shot from runner up Derrick Hewitt.
The scores in general were much better than in recent weeks for some unknown reason so perhaps in Bobby's case is may be because he well knows every blade of grass on the course.
Bob won the H & J voucher while Derrick scored the sleeve of balls and the run down saw Duayne Burmeister 40, Ron Simon and Alex McKinlay on 38, Mark Griffiths from the Grange club, Rhys Farrell and Eddy Reats all on 37 points.
The pin on the 5th went to Rhys Farrell, the 7th to Peter Balfour, the 9th to Keith Clarke, the 11th to Scott McLennan and the 16th to Mick Payne. The pro pin on 13 saw Derrick Hewitt win 4 balls, Matty Tate 3, Charlie Morrison and keeping it in the family Brian Morrison 2 balls each.
Sunday saw a small but select field play in the 36 hole foursomes championships. the winners foir the 2nd year in a row were that good golfer Eamon Cockram and partner Shaun Campbell. They shot 151 over the 36 holes to win comfortably and collect the trophy from sponsor Brownlie Concreteors. The Coe Cup for the 36 hole nett event sponsored by the Sandy Creek Hotel was won by Slim Eldridge and Dave Speedy. The best 1st 18 nett was won by the ageless Ken Burley and partner Con Seibel with 70 while Don Stewart and Tony Kahler won the 2nd 18 best nett with a smart 66 despite an 8 on the 10th hole. The pin on 9 was won by Dave Speedy while that good golfer Eamon Cockram won the 11th and Al Matthews the 13th.
A big thanks and congratulations to all members that played in the event.
The committee wish to thank all who turned up for the stick picking programme on Friday morning last. There was no shortage of sticks following some windy weather recently and while truck loads were collected, there are still plenty of smaller sticks laying around so if able could members pick up and place them aside from the playing areas if possible.
Next Saturday Advance Metal Products sponsor the 18 hole stroke flag event and thanks again to the generous sponsor who seems to be on the sponsor list quite regularly.
There is a big day planned for next Sunday. The Westpac Bushfire Day is a 2 ball ambrose event with a time sheet operating between 10.00am and 12 noon.
