Women’s Golf Notes for September 11th

In beautiful Spring weather 107 ladies from fourteen golf clubs enjoyed our annual Open Day last Tuesday. It was a pleasure to see previous members Cheryl Sternberg and Christine Hankinson-Jones back to enjoy the course. A score of 73 nett won the day with a countback required between 3 ladies.  Our own Patti Hemmings took out the Division 4 best nett after awarding the best overall nett to Andrea Geange from City and Shirley Leahy the runner-up best nett from Pittsworth. Well played to these ladies. Cheryl won the overall gross event with a score of 83 proving just how difficult the course played on the day. The best nett runner-ups were prolific for the home club with Melanie McLennan taking out Div 1 (75), Nachcha Craggs Div 2 and Ann Ellis Div 4, both with 76. Christine won the best Stableford for Div 1 with 31 pts, Michelle Wright Div 2 with 29 and Judy Stiff Div 4 with 33. Lois Wilson had a great day winning the Div 4 accuracy / long drive on the 4thand also the Div 4 pin shot. Marg Adcock and Liz Cockram also won pin shots being nearest to the flag however Mel was in the hole for her approach on the 7thfor a birdie. Conditions on the day with late wind and a couple of tricky pin placements made scoring difficult with the daily scratch rating being 75 for only the second time this year. Many thanks to the 24 ladies who took out cards and played hosts to our many visitors. Positive comments about the day were heard all around the clubhouse following play from the course condition, men helping with bunker raking, lunch and afternoon tea sweets and the general organisation of the day which has been very rewarding for the Committee. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who made the day possible and to our sponsors Warwick Credit Union, John Dee Meats and Sam Eaves Proshop. A big thankyou also to Michelle Wright for donating the quirky ball marker packages for the six Par 3 approach prizes. After playing all at various Open Days across the Downs, our cumulative Pennants results have come in equal with City. The 2019 Pennants winner will now be decided at the first Open Day in 2020 between City and us.

Wednesday saw 8 hearty souls return to play a fun 3 club plus putter stableford event from the red markers sponsored by KFC. Well played to Nachcha winning with 31 pts. Jill Barnes was runner-up on 30, with the other 6 players being Vicki Bennett and Di Johnston 28, Patricia Eastwell 27, Michelle Wright 25, Helen Olsen 22 and Judy Stiff 20. The all-in-pin went to Judy on the front nine and Jill on the back nine. With such a limited field Michelle won the only Propin ball on offer.

Saturday was the September Monthly Medal with an even 10 players in each of the 2 Divisions. We thank the Condamine Club for their continued sponsorship of this event. Despite the windy, smokey day Marg Adcock played beautiful golf to have an 81 off the stick, 70 nett and needed only 25 putts to complete her round to win a Warwick Golf Club embossed wine glass as putting champion. Well played Marg to win Division 1 from Mary Young on 71 nett. Both ladies had gobbles to help their score. Division 2 winner was Joan Burt who also played nice golf having a score of 74 nett taking only 29 putts for her round winning the other wine glass putting prize. Yvonne Pinington was runner-up in Division 2 with a tidy 75 nett. Balls in the rundown went to Gwen Mills and Di Evans 76, Ellie Casey and Anne Lyons on 77. Remainder of the scores:- Div 1: M Kahler N Craggs 77, H Oslen 83. J Barnes J Lester 85. Div 2: L Ellis 77, J Davis 79, Z Crook 80, K Morrison 85, A Payne J Singleton 87 and L Carey.  The all in approach was won by Nachcha, with Marg, Helen and Janet taking out the graded approach. Our winners topped off their day with Marg winning 2 balls and Joan one in the ProPin. There’s no doubt that accuracy to the pin and good putting takes the cake every time!

Good luck to Jill Barnes, Di Evans and Lois Wilson as they travel to Maroochy River Golf Course to contest the Gertrude McLeod Winner’s Event next Monday. Melanie McLennan will be half way through her week of matchplay in the Downs& South West Meg Nunn team by now. Log into the Women’s Golf Gold Coast website wggc.com.au for up to date scores.
